The physical aspect of yoga, the asanas, receives only three mentions in the Yoga Sutras, a foundational text of yoga philosophy. Among these mentions, sutra 2.46, “sthira sukham asanam,” emphasizes the importance of finding steadiness and comfort in posture. While this sutra holds significant weight for yogis, its interpretation varies due to its brevity.

Many practitioners uphold the idea that each asana should embody a balance of both ease (sukha) and effort (sthira), but the sutra itself doesn’t specify the exact proportions or insist on their simultaneous presence. I believe that the emphasis should be on recognizing and responding to the needs of our bodies in each moment of practice. Sometimes, growth requires more effort, while at other times, it demands a lighter touch.

Rather than adhering rigidly to a single interpretation, we should strive to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our yoga practice. The sutras were intentionally crafted with ambiguity, meant to be elucidated by knowledgeable teachers attuned to the nuances of individual practice. Without such guidance, it’s essential to cultivate self-awareness and a flexible approach, rather than becoming mired in yoga dogma.

Ultimately, the journey of yoga is one of self-discovery and growth. Embrace the fluidity of your practice, trust in your intuition, and allow yourself the freedom to explore the subtleties of each moment on the mat.

I never post my first try. I find that my initial attempt rarely captures the full potential of what I aim to express. It’s not that the first try is inherently flawed, but rather that subsequent attempts often produce better and more refined results. Improvement through practice is a fundamental aspect of learning and growth. Repetition is refinement. I think using this app to showcase your best is natural and normal. Also, the opposite, showing your path inspires others to walk theirs. But even in those videos, it probably wasn’t their first attempt. So, I thought I would share mine in this post. Here is me, hitting record and trying what I thought up in my head. Honestly, not that bad. I wanted to refine a few little movements, and my knee slipped off my elbow in a weird way that I wasn’t expecting. This isn’t me showing my journey. You need to do a lot of scrolling to see that! 😅 So, here you go. First attempt. Pretty good. Could be better! 😂
